ECOS
The Environmental Community of Students
The ECOS program is in its first year at Furman. It is run by Furman's Engaged Living program with funding and support from the Year of the Environment. Like the other engaged living groups on campus, these students live together and take an introductory class with their hall and brother/sister hall for fall term. They have unique opportunities for in-class and out-of-class experiences that continue throughout the year.
What makes the ECOS group different from the other engaged living groups is that these students have committed to devoting 3-4 hours per week to environmental/sustainability initiatives on and off campus. Each student that fulfills his or her commitment will receive a stipend of $1,000 at the end of the year.
Some of the work this group will be involved in includes: Furman's organic garden, athletic event recycling, dorm recycling, the bio-diesel project, Lake Conestee project, the Rails-to-trails project, and many more. Stay tuned for updates from Furman's first Environmental Community of Students!
